John Wayne plays a local cowboy who has a hard time when his estranged wife rides into town, teaming Wayne with Maureen O'Hara a decade after they appeared in 'The Quiet Man' (1952).
Very loosely based on The Taming of the Shrew, McLintock is a Western which involves a full blown battle of the sexes. John Wayne stars as a cattle baron who has to tackle not only the usual fare of attacking Indians but also his wife and daughter, both of whom have had enough of the West. McLintock does entertain, and the slapstick comedy is decent. However, McLintock's claim to wallop the daylights out of every Western you've ever seen is certainly stretching the truth. For a start, the film is breathtakingly misogynistic and it's hard to appreciate the merits of a film in which women are spanked and assaulted all in the name of a few laughs. McLintock has aged extremely badly. On the plus side at least you get to see how shocking social attitudes were back then…
misogyny…
