Synopsis
In this Sidney Lumet-directed Motown rendition of THE WIZARD OF OZ, Diana Ross plays a soulful Dorothy, accompanied by a cast peppered with R&B stars such as Michael Jackson, Roberta Flack and Luther Vandross.
With a famous and popular cast, this Motown adaptation of the Wizard of Oz is a classic. Featuring Michael Jackson (as scarecrow), Diana Ross (Dorothy), Tedd Ross (cowardly lion), Nipsey Russell (Tinman), Lena Horne (Glinda the Good Witch) and Richard Pryor (The Wiz), this has great sing-a-long songs, and a really funny script. It is very difficult to beat the original 1939 version with Judy Garland, and it doesn’t quite do that. However, it is a brave and ambitious attempt which has bold and lavish scenes that are very impressive. This is a bit too long, and a few of the song and dance numbers would benefit from being shortened, however it is more than made up for by Michael Jackson’s routines and dancing! If you like musicals, you will love this film, go get it!
