Synopsis

Kevin Costner, Dennis Hopper and Jeanne Tripplehorn star in a turbocharged action-adventure epic, unmatched in sheer excitement and heart-pounding suspense. In this futuristic thriller, Earth is covered with water and the human race struggles to survive on dilapidated boats and makeshift floating cities.     It is far beyond its time when made, and one day will be recognised as one of the better masterpeices of true Science Fiction.

    I know it was not a huge success and it cost more than it made back , but that does not stop it being a marvell of a story.

    Sez me anyway, and I have now watched this 5 times and will no doubt watch it again and again .

    Waterworld is the story of a flooded Earth after the apocalypse, with Kevin Costner playing a human with mutated elements that allow him to swim like a fish and breathe using gills behind his ears. After finding a little girl with a map tattooed on her which points to legendary ‘land’, Costner is left to protect the young girl from ‘smokers’ who are out to get her – the foremost villain being played by Dennis Hopper. Kevin Costner put so many of his millions into this movie and it was very difficult to live up to the pre-release hype - infamous for its bad reviews. But this is unfortunately rather underrated, and within the excellent and obviously high budget set lies a cast of excellent actors and an abundance of fast-paced action which is well worth a watch. Particularly exceptional in this movie is Hopper, who deliciously overacts the role of cartoon baddie to a wonderful effect.
