Synopsis

After Irena (Nastassia Kinski), a young woman with a mysterious past, is reunited with her brother Paul (Malcom MacDowell), a series of bizarre events is set into motion. When Irena discovers that her sexuality is intimately linked with that of her brother's--as well as with a strange human-feline metamorphosis they secretly share--the moment is both frightening and alluring. A remake of the 1942 supernatural horror film of the same name, Paul Schrader's version of 'Cat People' is more graphic, more eroticized, and more detailed in content. Shot in New Orleans, an eerie stillness permeates the film, coupled with naturally delivered dialogue that moves the story along. Ruby Dee provides extra mysterious insinuations as Female, the sibling's live-in servant in their French-style mansion, and John Heard is perfectly cast as Oliver, the animal biologist and love interest of Irena.

  1. Original is better

    06 December 2008
An enjoyable film but the original is probably better. The story revolves around a brother and sister, descendants from the cat people where humans sacrificed their women to panthers and mated with them. When they have sex other than their own cat people kind, they turn into black panthers and can only revert back to human form by killing. Where the original was much more direct and subtle, the scenes in this movie are graphic with lots of blood, nudity, incest and erotic sexual activity. But if you look pass that (which is hard to do) it’s still an interesting film to watch although the plot does sound absurd. But for a horror movie, I guess absurd is a good thing, although this film does lack the moody atmosphere that the original 1942 film has. I guess what makes this watchable is the chemistry between Kinski as the innocent sister and McDowell as the creepy, unnerving brother.
