Synopsis

On the hottest day of the summer of 1935, thirteen-year-old Briony Tallis sees her older sister Cecilia (Kiera Knightley) strip off her clothes and plunge into the fountain in the garden of their country house. Watching Cecilia is their housekeeper's son Robbie Turner (James McAvoy), a childhood friend who, along with Briony's sister, has recently graduated from Cambridge.

By the end of that day the lives of all three will have been changed forever. Robbie and Cecilia will have crossed a boundary they had never before dared to approach and will have become victims of the younger girl's scheming imagination, and Briony will have committed a dreadful crime, the guilt for which will colour her entire life.

  1. Beautiful

I was not really interested in watching the movie when it came out but I thought it cannot be that bad; seeing as there are no decent movies out these days anyway. I agree with Chris in that it does take some time to see how powerful the story really is but when you do, it's really beautifully put together and the manner in which it all comes to an end is overwhelming. Atonement is true to life as life doesnt always deal us with happy endings.
  2. surprisingly good

When I first saw Atonement at the Chelsea Cinema I wasn't expecting much as I wasn't Keira Knightley's biggest fan. Having said that I must say this was one of the best films I had seen in ages. The cast, which includes James McAvoy, Romola Garai and Brenda Blethyn, were all on top form not to mention the child actors, there performances were delivered beautifully. The cinematography was eye poppingly amazing and the script was just wonderful. I can't remember the last time I felt so emotionally connected with any film. This is a film that can make even a strong man reduced to tears. The story does not contain many flashy scenes of action, but relies on its simple dramatic components and graphic visuals to touch the viewer. Another strength was the interesting repetition of scenes which were powerful and effective for the story. It takes some time to see how powerful the story really is
