Synopsis

The world's richest and most lovable drunk risks everything when he falls in love with an irascible waitress in the hilarious comedy starring Dudley Moore and Academy Award-winner Liza Minnelli.

Arthur's (Moore) billionaire family gives him an ultimatum: He must choose between marrying the most boring rich girl (Jill Eikenberry) on Long Island or staying with his low-class, shoplifting girlfriend (Minnelli) and losing his inheritance. For the first time in his life, Arthur wants something he cannot buy-the woman he loves. Arthur's valet and best friend (John Gielgud) begs Arthur to marry the deadly dull debutante and keep the money. But Arthur's heart simply won't let him.

It's a situation that would drive a man to drink--if he weren't already drunk--in this giddy, bubbly comic masterpiece.

Great soundtrack

It's hard to put your finger on this one. Basically I suppose it's a comedy about an idle rich drunk who falls in love with a (comparatively) poor girl, whom he wants to marry at the risk of being disowned by his family. It has funny moments, romantic moments, and touching moments. Dudley Moore is funny and somehow makes his self-centred character endearing, Liza Minelli is a convincing foil as the feisty opposite he attracts, but John Gielgud steals the show as Arthur's wonderfully sarcastic butler. It's corny but great fun with a memorable soundtrack; Oscars went to Burt Bacharach for his song and Sir John Gielgud for his performance as the sly butler. One of the few films where the funniest part isn't in the dialogue, but rather when Arthur just laughs in his sleep.
