Kinetic kids' movie

It’s been a long time since the Turtles were a worldwide phenomenon and also since they were last seen on-screen in the dark and dull Turtles III (the serious ancient Japan setting did not prove popular). Back then they were a Jim Henson combination of lumbering men-in-a-suits and facial puppetry. Now in the age of CGI they’re back in an animation of what would seem to be a quick cash-in. However this transition to CGI is surprisingly successful; the animation allows the action sequences to be enjoyably kinetic with an incredibly mobile camera dodging the mutant amphibians’ kicks and punches. And while the characters’ design can grate (their faces seem a little too squashed) this is a short, sharp kids’ movie that is ultimately a lot more fun than their live-action trilogy.
