World-renowned martial arts master and Asian film sensation Jet Li stars as a one-man arsenal who escapes from a Hong Kong jail to avenge his brother's murder in Los Angeles and finds himself falling in love with the daughter of a rival crime boss.
This is a solid film. This is effectively a remake of Shakespeare’s classic tale of Romeo and Juliet set in the modern day with an influential hip/hop soundtrack. The urban version in other words. This is considerably different from the original story and if you want something close to Shakespeare’s tale then watch Baz Luhrmann’s version of Romeo and Juliet for his modern take. This stars Jet Li and the late Aaliyah as the star-crossed lovers and they make a decent pairing. It’s not always perfect but it is definitely watchable and charming at times. The plot is also not perfect but again there are moments which will keep you watching including the action sequences. The sad thing about this film is that this was one of Aaliyah’s last films she completed before she died at an early age. She does a good job in this film and it was a shame her life was cut so tragically short.
