  1. Light-hearted and sophisticated Lubitsch comedy

    06 December 2008
German émigré director Ernst Lubitsch was known for the ‘Lubitsch touch’, a skill at turning out delicate and sophisticated comedies. The Shop Around the Corner is no exception. In a Hollywood vision of Budapest, the story revolves around a little boutique shop run by Mr. Matuschek, played by Frank Morgan (The Wizard of Oz). Herein we witness a growing romance between Klara and Alfred (Margaret Sullivan & James Stewart) who are receiving each other’s love letters without knowing it. This is a great example of the kind of sparkling, light-hearted movies that Hollywood made before the war took over.
