    Prohibition-era gangster classic

    06 December 2008
One of the key titles of the 1930s gangster cycle, this one again sends James Cagney on a rise to power. Distinguished by its 1920s prohibition storyline, the film is set amidst the underworld of speakeasies and bootleg liquor. The First World War becomes the raison d'être for crime waves in the 20s. Here we see Cagney and Bogart in the trenches where they have learnt to kill – Bogart callously snipes an unseen young German soldier moments before the Armistice is announced – only to return to society as unemployable veterans. Struggling to survive, Cagney stumbles into a life of crime and is soon developing his own brand of undrinkable (though popular) bathtub liquor. Though famous for his trademark machine-gun vocal delivery, also on-show here is Cagney’s uniquely visual performance style, all clenched fists and menacing stances.
