Synopsis

Meet Roy and his ambitious protégé Frank, a couple of con artists. Grifters. Matchstick Men.

Business is good: the two run a successful, small-time scam. But Roy's personal life is a mess. Chain-smoking, obsessive-compulsive, and agoraphobic, with idiosyncrasies that threaten his criminal productivity, Roy requires a psychoanalyst just to stay in working order. Now, much to his shock he discovers he has a 14-year-old daughter, Angela, who wants to know her father. And as Roy and Frank develop a style of parenting with a unique spin, they realize that Angela has an interest and a knack for the family business as she earns her place as one of the Matchstick Men.

    I have to admit, I watch alot of films and they tend to follow a similar pattern, which gets predictable, but MATCHSTICK MEN caught me completely off guard a few times, and Cage gave an excellent performance. The story is fairly average, but the performances really make the film very watchable. Im glad i watched it.

    It is wrong to describe MATCHSTICK MEN as a caper-movie, all though the main characters are two great con-men (sorry, con ARTISTS). It is however a wonderful character-driven drama about a neurotic criminal who gets his life turned upside-down when the 14 year old daughter he has never seen suddenly enters his life as he is about to pull a big job. Well, when the ending comes, it turns out that MATCHSTICK MEN was about much more than this, but still what makes the movie is Cage's brilliant, at times hilarious performance as Roy. This is one of those movies you can't really talk about until everyone has seen it out of fear you will reveal too much of the plot! A wonderful film with plot and characters that will take you by surprise.

    I think I was dragged to this movie, and was really pleasantly surpised. The film is shot really well, and the details of the movie are so precise, especially how Nicolas Cage's character acts in his house with his OCD. Defintely worth seeing as it's just a really good movie.
