Full, Hollywood-ised version of the classic English legend of Robin Hood, starring Kevin Costner as the eponymous hero, and Alan Rickman hamming it up in full villain mode as the Sheriff of Nottingham.
This film provides exactly the right balance of edge-of-the-seat action, romance, humour, and of course the eventual triumph of the forces for good over those for evil. While several elements of the story were not exactly traditional (Robin’s sidekick, Azeem, played by Morgan Freeman being one of these), the film still has Robin attempting to thwart the dastardly Sheriff of Nottingham (Alan Rickman, stealing the show from Costner) and win the heart of the beautiful Marian. Still as watchable now as when it first appeared, the film may be old-fashioned, but this is hardly a complaint. In fact, maybe Hollywood could learn a thing or two by going back to making more films that can stand up to Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.
Still as good today
