Synopsis

Deep in cyberspace, behind the world's most sophisticated security systems, the United States darkest secrets - and billions in illegal government funds - lie waiting for anyone who's a smart enough computer hacker.

Gabriel Shear plans to finance his own brand of ruthless patriotism - if he can break into this virtual Fort Knox. He needs parolee Stanley Jobson, the only man capable of penetrating the layers of firewalls and encrypted passwords. Now Shear and his partner, Ginger, use every lure, including the promise to reunite Jobson with his daughter, to obtain the greatest computer hack ever. But once inside their clandestine world, Jobson realizes he's a pawn in a plot far more sinister than he could ever imagine.

Well it's certainly flashy - one of those films where the makers seem to luxuriate in how much money has obviously been thrown at the screen. But was it all worth it? Well, 'not really' is the inevitable answer. Aside from Travolta, all the leads are watchable as usual, and the set-pieces are as slick and explosive as you'd expect. The problem is, there seems to be very little underneath it all. As is so often the case with films centered around technology, what seems oh-so-terribly cutting edge at the time of filming can very quickly seem laughably archaic (remember 'Hackers'?). And there's really no way to make computers seem exciting - at one point Jackman has a gun held to his head while receiving a blowjob from a hooker as a distraction and it's STILL boring. The best that can be said is it's a very efficient way to pass 99 minutes of your life. But you wont get them back.
