Synopsis

On the eve of his retirement, Jerry Black faces the uncertainty of life after the police force. But when the body of a slain 8-year-old girl is discovered, Jerry solemnly swears to the grieving mother to capture the child's murderer. The dubious confession of a simpleminded ex-con and a psychological analysis of the little girl's drawings fuel Jerry's belief that the real culprit continues to prowl - and the detective's moral resolve teeters on the brink of a maddening and dangerous obsession in this gritty drama.

A brilliant portyrayal of vague unease

What a dull film. MILD paranoia, VAGUE unease... I could go on.
This film reaches for something that it never quite grasps. its all too diffuse, too subtle to ever really capture the intensity of emotion that I think Penn was trying to portray. A shame really: a good cast and story wasted by bad handling of narrative.

    gripping

The Pledge is a slow yet gripping film. I’m obviously more use to Sean Penn as an actor than a director, so to see him churn out this thought-provoking movie is a nice touch. This is definitely not your average thriller and if that is not your cup of tea, then this film is not for you. If you want that kind of film, watch

Con Air. This film will instantly remind you why Jack Nicholson is one of the best actors around as he plays a retiring police officer, trying to track down the killer of a young girl. Now the plot is predictable – it becomes glaringly obvious on the killer’s identity, so you won’t get any prizes for guessing correctly but I don’t think that is what Penn was achieving in this film with his Clint Eastwood master class of directing. It’s more focused on the pursuit of the crime and the suspense. Appreciate this film for Nicholson’s and Del Toro’s performance.
