Synopsis

Gene Kelly, Debbie Reynolds and Donald O'Connor star in one of the greatest musicals ever filmed.

Musician Don Lockwood (Kelly) rises to stardom during Hollywood's silent-movie era--paired with the beautiful, jealous and dumb Lina Lamont (Jean Hagen). When Lockwood becomes attracted to young studio singer Kathy Selden (Reynolds), Lamont has her fired. But with the introduction of talking pictures, audiences laugh when they hear Lockwood speak for the first time--and the studio uses Selden to dub her voice.

Set during the advent of "talkies," this film's classic song-and-dance numbers celebrate the beginning of movie musicals.

One of the essential Hollywood movies

    06 December 2008
One of the absolute pinnacles of classical Hollywood cinema, Singin’ in the Rain effortlessly balances story, structure, song, dance and comedy. The film is self-reflexive; it deals with how the film industry faced the coming of sound in 1927, a technology that Warner Bros. itself galvanised with The Jazz Singer. It satirises silents and early sound, targeting histrionic performances in American silents, the difficulty of recording sound on-set, and the crisis faced by silent stars with terrible voices. The songs are gathered from previous musicals but were redefined by this film. Gene Kelly’s athletic dancing style is on show in the spectacular and funny dance numbers (see ‘Fit as a Fiddle’) and matched by Donald O’Conner’s comic support (‘Make ‘Em Laugh’). This is really one of the essential films.
