    OK-ish

I quite enjoyed it until the last 10 minutes or so where (like a lot of American movies) it seemed obliged to turn into an episode of The Waltons.

    Beautifully intelligent

    23 October 2010
Aside from the stunning effects and gripping sci-fi indulgence, this film has at it's heart a finely sculpted vision of just how "We" would truly behave if we found ourselves presented with a potential opportunity to finally answer the big one: Are we alone?. The governmental corruption and private enterprise scavengers jostle for slices of the pie while our heroine tries to hold on to Her simple but ultimately more powerful desire to find Herself. Or more precisely: To find a connection that provides Her scientific mind a sound platform on which She can rebuild some faith. Not a second is wasted throughout this moving film. From the start we are along side Ellie feeling Her every joy and setback. The grand theme is so tastefully rendered that the emotional journey serving as the backbone of this film interweaves with the lush glory and idealism all great sci-fi should have, without a single jolt or jitter. This is a first class film. Like all great stories it leaves you not wanting more but instead, feeling that the characters continue to live and develop long after the credits have rolled. This reviewer highly recommends spending time in the company of these people. If you've ever looked up at the night sky and wondered if someone might be looking back at you, join the club.

    Jodie Foster

Get this right this is a bad bad film. A film with ideas should follow form with content. Think Stalker. This is probably one of the worst films in terms of form that I have ever seen. A TV film would be more experimental. In terms of content, who would ever think that a USA president would be interested in a theologian? I know theologians, and not one of them are that good looking or that stupid. But what is truly mind boggling about this film is why is such a great actress like Jodie Foster doing in it? Imagine someone that intelligent being directing by a someone her equal? Like Werner Herzog, for example? Now that would be a film to watch!

a handsome film to ponder and discuss

    06 December 2008
Contact is a well crafted film that is able to penetrate our sensibilities about the unknown. Are we alone in this great mass of space? Jodie Foster Plays the lead character Ellie Arroway with ferocity and rationality, an enigmatic woman of intrigue and beauty. The spiritual and poetic opening to Contact, with it's sound to silence pull out to the distance universe penetrates the senses. The film tries to remain serious with it's "Contact". The script throws in theology, pessimism, optimism, fear, progress, and wonder with great effect. There is a small love story in the sub plot and it fits best low lying. Director Zemeckis does a terrific job at building suspense and intrigue into the deciphering Ellie's discovery. There is political and religious debate as well as ego grabbers in this discovery.
The special effects are beautiful and well crafted.
