Synopsis

William Hurt and Geena Davis star with Kathleen Turner in this touching story of a travel writer who hates to travel, a man who lives a well-ordered life in his well-ordered world until suddenly everything changes for the Accidental Tourist.

When Macon Leary's (Hurt) wife, Sarah (Turner), leaves him, Macon withdraws even further into his protected world. But an event that Macon did not plan and cannot control occurs: He breaks his leg. Now into his well-ordered life enters plucky, outgoing dog trainer Muriel Pritchett (Davis), who determinedly opens Macon's closed life to endless new possibilities. But when Sarah returns, Macon must choose between going back ... or forward.

  1. Worth the watch

    06 December 2008
William Hurt stars as Macon Leary, an emotionally distant writer of travel guides trying to carry on with his life after his son is killed in an accident and his marriage crumbles. He then starts having an affair and considers which is worth pursuing. The plot can be perceived as slow but I guess it depends on how you look at it but this film is definitely character driven which I thought it was executed nicely. The main and supporting casts are good in this sweet yet sometimes funny film, especially William Hurt who literally looks like he has given up on life. The dialogue is sharp and witty and with music supplied by the legendary John Williams, I’m pretty sure you will love it just because it probably goes against the typical Hollywood drivel that is in our cinemas today, in terms of when the main premise is about relationships. This is certainly a good film and worth the watch.
