This is a very dark crime thriller by William Friedkin in which Al Pacino plays Steve Burns, a detective for the NYPD who goes undercover as a homosexual in order to catch a murderer that has been killing men known to frequent S&M and Bondage clubs. He fits the victims' profile and hopes he can lure the killer to him by infiltrating this subculture of gay society. Al Pacino, in one of his non-famous roles is brilliant as the detective who starts to change once undercover. In true Friedkin style, this film purposely frustrates the audience... in a good way. The characters are not likeable and it is impossible to be sure of anything. The ambiguity in this film is such that never before has Friedkin's quote "What interests me is the very thin line between good and evil" been so true for one of his films.
