Anna Karenina

Good Drama Film

This film is not bad. Greta Garbo plays Anna Karenina who falls in love with count Vronsky despite her husband’s refusal to grant her a divorce as they contend with the social repercussions. It’s a nice film with some good performances from Greta herself. The rest of the cast also do a good job with Basil Rathbone and Fredric March. However, I did find a problem with March as Vronsky. He seems to lack the passion that would make Anna fall in love with him. But technically, this film is well made. The production design does a good job and there are some iconic scenes involving Garbo, for example, when she gets off the train when we first see her as she is introduced to the audience. Garbo’s relationship with her on-screen son is portrayed well. She shows how much she wants to be a good mother but yet wants to be loved and desired at the same time. It’s a good drama film.
