Synopsis
The Crusades—that world-shaping 200-year collision between Europe and the East—frames the tale of a young Frenchman who discovers his destiny as a knight, then lives out what that glorious title really means.
It's not bad exactly, but it's hard not to feel like you've seen it all before. In a similar way to another of Scott's films - American Gangster - Kingdom of Heaven seem to be so self-conscious about aspiring to instant classic status that it forgets to put the work into making it so. Orlando Bloom isn't as bad as has been made out in some reviews but it is true that he perhaps doesn't have enough of a presence to make him compelling enough over the course of the film. Still, it is a blessed relief that Russel Crowe was otherwise engaged when the casting for this film was put together - and in that respect, Bloom does hold the film together. All the battle scenes are suitably epic but, aside from the quite prescient Christians vs. Muslims aspect (which Scott insists should not be read as allegory) there's really nothing new on offer.
