The Great Gabbo is a true oddity. Centered around Eric von Stroheim's portrayal of an increasingly crazed ventriloquist (the 'Great Gabbo' of the title) its likely that you've never seen anything quite like it. Gabbo's only means of expression is through his dummy - Otto - and 'eccentric' doesn't quite cover the way he acts around other, less wooden associates. His relentless ambition and mounting insecurity results in an inevitable descent into madness - resulting in an incredible scene where Gabbo walks onstage during a large-scale dance routine, berating the audience for having no taste. Altogether now - "You don't know how to laugh!"
mesmeric performance from Stroheim
