Synopsis

Meadows is the hysterically exaggerated Leon Phelps, a smooth-talking, lisping, sex-loving skirt chaser, whose every line is even more crass and politically incorrect than the one before it. Just when everything seems to be sailing along smoothly, Phelps is fired from his job as a radio talk show host for making inappropriate comments on the air. As he searches for a new job with his too-good-to-be-true producing partner Julie, he receives a letter from a woman claiming he is her true love. The only problem is that he can't figure out which of his many conquests she happens to be. By the time an angry mob of jealous husbands led by Lance DeLune catches up with him, he has decided once and for all who he really wants. Meadows's obvious affection for his character shines through in THE LADIES MAN, providing the film with a surprising amount of sweetness.

  1. Compelling comedy B-movie

    06 December 2008
Another movie out of the Saturday Night Live stable, this one stars Tim Meadows as Leon Phelps, an afroed playboy who seems to have walked out of a 1970s blaxploitation movie. While some may accuse Meadows' lispy performance as being one-note, he has a comic touch that can make even non-comic dialogue funny. As it should be for a comedy of this kind, the plot is really an excuse to have its characters interact. It's peppered with famous faces such as Billy Dee Williams, Lee Evans, and Julianne Moore who gives a twisted cameo as a horny clown. Will Ferrell in particular has some sharp moments, mostly around his obsession with Greco-Roman wrestling. Add an angry mob who expel their rage through Broadway-style song-and-dance and what is pitched as a B-movie actually ends up having it's moments.
