Synopsis
Music-based romantic drama about the late singer/songwriter Frankie Lymon, who was responsible for many hit records but whose self-destructive life ended early, with many relationships left unresolved.
You've seen this story before: the rise and fall of a young singing superstar. Yet this film largely avoids the trappings of the standard biopic with its key strength: the story is so damn interesting. Frankie Lymon was very young when he had a hit with 'Why Do Fools Fall in Love', winding up with three wives by the time he died. Cue a royalties battle over who gets the cash from the newly-released Diana Ross cover. A series of flashbacks interweave Lymon's life with his three wives, played by the glamorous trio of Halle Berry, Vivica A. Fox and Lela Rochon. The period production design is colourful and evocative and when the music hits, it has an infectious energy. And while Larenz Tate is solid as Lymon, footage of the real Lymon - a wildly talented but weird-looking kid - reveals that Tate is too handsome to capture the eccentricities of this curious character.
Energetic biopic
