Synopsis

On the evening of Saturday, 14 November 1970, a jet carrying the Marshall University football team, coaches and fans, crashes in the Appalachian Mountains. Now, university president Dedmon (David Strathairn--Good Night, And Good Luck.) plans to end the school's football program for the season--perhaps indefinitely. Assistant coach Red Dawson (Matthew Fox--"Lost"), who narrowly missed the ill-fated flight, can't face going back onto the field . . . But in this small town, football is a way of life. And with the strength and leadership of young, outsider coach Jack Lengyel (Matthew McConaughey--Frailty), the town and the university rally to rebuild a football team and to heal a community.

    Great tear jerker

When a plane crash claims the lives of members of the Marshall University football team and some of its fans, the team's new coach (McConaughey) and his surviving players try to keep the American Football program alive. Fighting first against the administration, who want to shut down the team, and then playing against the tough teams at opposing schools, this film focuses on how the program started up again. New players are brought in, training montages take place, and of course, the team fights its way through the season. We Are Marshall deftly shows the suffering of this small town in Middle America, how those who survived try to move on, and most importantly, how the football team recovers. If you like Remember the Titans and Friday Night Lights, you’ll like We Are Marshall.
