Synopsis

This good vs. evil thriller casts Mitchum as sadistic ex-con Max Cady determined to wreak revenge on the family of Sam Bowden (Gregory Peck), the good small-town lawyer who put him in jail years earlier. Stripped of legal recourse, the civilized Bowden is slowly forced to lower himself to Cady's bestial level to protect his family.

    better than the remake

    J Lee Thompson’s 1962 version of Cape Fear is far superior to the 1991 remake. There is a far careful use of violence, and Starring Gregory Peck as a stalker victim, and Robert Mitchum as his vengeful disturbing follower, this film displays some impressive acting. Mitchum in particular plays an exceedingly believable and slimy sycophant, harassing the family within the law which is maddening and exasperating to see. The film is a great reflection of the time, and yet hasn’t become outdated. Peck’s ‘perfect’ happy family emanates a genuine feeling of fear and unease throughout the film, which allows you to sympathize with their vulnerability and helplessness - a factor which is regrettably missed in Scorsese‘s remake.
