Synopsis

Guilty? Innocent? Those questions aren't for high-powered Chicago attorney Martin Vail (Richard Gere) to decide. His job is to defend - especially if a case will put his name in the headlines and further his career. When Vail hears that a penniless altar boy (Edward Norton) is accused of murdering the local archbishop, he snaps up the case, eager for the media spotlight. Little does he know that it will uncover a viper's nest of corruption, pit him against a prosecutor (Laura Linney) who's his ex-lover, and test all his skill, judgement and even his win-at-any-cost attitude.

Primal fear for me is an underrated court room mystery film. The story revolves around a murder of a well loved priest by what appears to be an altar boy. From then on, you are on your own to discover the truth and lies in this fascinating mystery. What helped this film in terms of the entertainment value are the excellent performances from the cast, especially Edward Norton although I also thought Laura Linney deserved a mention as well. With Norton, he adds that degree of emotional depth throughout the film which keeps the audience guessing about his intentions in his first ever acting performance. Richard Gere does well as the ambitious lawyer who wants to make it to the big time with fame and fortune. There is a very good balance between story and character development and I thought the plot twists enhanced the story rather than hamper it.
