Synopsis

While researching 19th-century poet Randolph Henry Ash, a pair of literary sleuths, Roland Michell and Maud Bailey, stumble upon a love letter written by Ash, who was supposedly faithfully married, to Christabel LaMotte, a lesser-known poet believed to be a chaste spinster. In unearthing the Victorians' amorous secret, the contemporary scholars find themselves falling under a passionate spell as they embark on a journey that challenges their fundamental beliefs about themselves.

Based on the Booker Prize-winning novel by A.S. Byatt.

    awful

This film has an interesting story but it just fails miserably on some bad dialogue and bad acting. Possession is effectively two movies in one. Set in the present with flashbacks to the 19th century, the film features two literary experts with a love of Victorian poetry as they discover a shocking secret about a revered 19th century poet. Now the period piece is not bad and the sole reason why this part is watchable is because of Jennifer Ehle and Jeremy Northam. But when it switches to the modern day characters, I just found them uninteresting and boring. I felt sorry for Gwyneth Paltrow and Aaron Eckhart as I’ve seen them in better roles but their dialogue was just awful. Even Gwyneth’s poor English accent will make you cringe. Add some missing plot holes in the script, the film feels messed up before the first shot was even made. Just stay clear at all costs.
