Synopsis

The South Pacific, 1789. On the far side of the Earth from their home in England, the crew of the H.M.S. Bounty suffers under the sadistic leadership of its captain, William Bligh (Academy Award winner Charles Laughton). Months from its return to port, the ship's first mate, Fletcher Christian (Gable), realizes that many of the crewmembers will not survive the voyage unless he takes control of the ship. But his decision to mutiny means that none of the crew can ever return home in this enduring, true adventure.

    Charles Laughton is highly impressive as the callous Captain Bligh, who in 1787 is ordered to take the Bounty, a British naval ship, to the island of Tahiti in the South Seas to gather breadfruit trees that'll be sent to the West Indies and used as rations for slaves. But the mission is damned from the beginning because of Captain Bligh's unbearable brutality to his crew and fellow officers, including Fletcher Christian (Clark Gable).

    Clark Gable as a British officer is as convincing as Richard Burton playing a German officer, but he still did greatly playing the role. Unfortunately Franchot Tone, in a supporting role, had some of the corniest dialogue of the whole film. The proper attention-stealer was of course Charles Laughton, who always made such a great screen villian. If you like traditional sea adventures, I definitely recommend this one.
