The odd-couple buddy cop movie set-up is really nothing new, and I can't imagine the premise turned too many heads upon it's release in 1982 either. However, 48 Hours becomes more than the sum of it's parts mainly due to the natural chemistry between its co-stars. There really are few people who can do 'grizzly, disheveled cop' like Nick Nolte, and Eddie Murphy puts in a star-making turn in his his film debut (watch out for the scene where Murphy single-handedly intimidates a roomful of rednecks with nothing more than some sharp-talking) . There's really not much more to be said about it than that, but it's an enjoyable way to spend an hour and a half. The two stars teamed up again 8 years later in an underwhelming sequel but the original still has enough bite and personality to stand up to the many films of the same premise that have come out since its release.
