Synopsis

Day after day, Paul Vitti (De Niro), New York's most notorious gangland figure, shuffles semi-catatonic around his prison cell, occasionally breaking into show tunes. Is Vitti having a nervous breakdown, or is his behavior a ploy for an early release? The FBI isn't sure ... and neither is his former psychotherapist, Ben Sobel (Billy Crystal). It will take time to examine the demons lurking in Vitti's mind - time that Sobel doesn't want to give. Not to Vitti.

But the reluctant psychiatrist has no choice: Vitti is released to Sobel's custody, becoming his patient again and, even worse, his houseguest - bringing his demons and would-be hit men, both imagined and real. Now, to get his life back, Sobel must help the troubled gangster sort out his psyche, find gainful employment ... and, for the first time in his life, go straight.

    tired and formulaic

There's only so many times that you can watch Robert De Niro do his shrug-and-grimace comedy routine before you start to sigh out of exasperation. It's not that De Niro's a bad comedy actor exactly, just that all his 'comedy' seems to come from him poking fun out of his former intense image, and there's only so far you can take that without it getting pretty tedious. Any spark that the original film (Analyse This) might have had has been lost along the way in this sequel which seems to be little more than a cynical cash-in on the unexpected success of the first film. There are some laughs to be had in the 'show within a show' - 'Little Caser' - which De Niro's mob boss gets involved in, which is an obvious spoof of The Sopranos, but ultimately any goodwill built up from Analyse This has long since dissipated by the time the end credits roll around.
