Synopsis

Based on an incredible true story, Coach Carter is the inspirational account of controversial basketball coach Ken Carter, who received both high praise and staunch criticism when he made national news for a gymnasium "lockout" of his entire undefeated team for poor academic performance. With the players, the parents, and the community rallying to get the team back on the court, Carter must overcome the obstacles of his environment and show the young men a future that stretches beyond gangs, drugs, prison and even baseketball.

    I swear Hollywood makes this film at least twice a year. You know the drill - unruly pupils at rundown school are shaken up and set straight by a tough yet unorthodox disciplinarian. Coach Carter certainly doesn't stray from this script - in fact it almost seems to revel in how closely it adheres to all the genre cliches. Still, it has two things going for it - the fact that it was based on a true story (which makes the cliches a bit more bearable), and a commanding performance from Samuel L. Jackson (does he give any other kind?). It's pretty much what you'd expect from an MTV production.
