empty streets...

Well it's definitely better than The Omega Man. Still, as an adaptation it's bound to disappoint the fans of Richard Matheson's novel by the end. The first hour or so certainly keeps you watching, with the scenes of an abandoned New York charting somewhere between 28 Days Later and the godawful Vanilla Sky in 'empty streets' movie chart. Will Smith is watchable as ever - especially as he's the only (human) actor on screen for the vast majority of the running time. Overall it's not bad as a piece of Friday night entertainment but in terms of adaptation I'd stick with Vincent Price.

I was expecting a bit more from this than it actually delivered. Will Smith's acting is good, and his impending derangement as the last person on earth entirely believable, but unfortunately the CGI is fairly poor and not well blended with the background which does spoil the illusion somewhat. And although the story-line is reasonable, it's quite different to the book, and the ending is typically hollywood cheese where they think you can't cope with what's supposed to happen. Overall about 3/5.
