Synopsis

The story ultimately revolves around two "men of honour"; their relationship, their individual and joint failures and triumphs. Carl Brashear is determined to be the first African American Navy Diver in a time where racism is strife. Leslie Sunday is his embittered trainer, determined to see him fail. Fate, challenges and circumstances eventually draw these two men together in a tale of turbulance and ultimately triumph.

One of the better military films

This film is probably the best film that I have seen Cuba Gooding Jr. in a movie. Yes, even better than his performance in Jerry Maguire. Cuba definitely delivers in this military drama. He is outstanding and it is a shame he doesn’t get more serious roles like this rather than the crap like Norbit, Daddy Day Camp or Snow Dogs. Helping to bring out the best of him is Robert De Niro who is also outstanding. It’s probably one of the better military films that I have seen, filled with some very powerful moments. The plot is well paced so don’t expect it to get bogged down with unnecessary distractions or subplots that sometimes happen in films like this. Yes it can be a little predictable at times and it can get a little sappy but don’t let that put you off. The acting alone from Cuba is enough to see it.
