Synopsis

The moment young Finn sets eyes on Estella, she becomes his inspiration and his obsession. Despite being warned, "she'll only break your heart," he vowed to win her love. Years later, thanks to a mysterious benefactor, aspiring artist Finn is off to New York, where he is reunited with the icy and beautiful Estella. When she agrees to model for him, Finn's dearest hopes may at last be realized-along with his darkest fears!

Great Expectations comes from a time in the late 90's when everybody seemed to be trying to emulate the success of Baz Luhrmann's 'Romeo & Juliet' by taking any piece of classic literature they could find, updating it to the present day, and covering it wall-to-wall with indie-pop. Whilst this might not be quite as much of a failure as some (see 'Cruel Intentions'), classic literary adaptation it is not. There is undeniable chemistry between the two leads but this gets a bit lost in the haze of 90's stylisation that really does date it a bit even 10 years later. It should also be said that you can't really depict somebody as an artistic genius if the paintings they make aren't up to scratch. Still, its a minor quibble and the performances are all pretty good (with Anne Bancroft and Chris Cooper in particular standing out in underused supporting roles).
