"Eagle Eye” is a race-against-time thriller starring Shia LaBeouf, Michelle Monaghan, Rosario Dawson, Anthony Mackie and Billy Bob Thornton. Two unsuspecting Americans are separately drawn into a conspiracy by a mysterious woman they have never met, but who seems to know their every move. By the time they discover her frightening identity, they have become her unwitting accomplices in a diabolical assassination plot.
It's like a cross between Enemy of the State and Universal Soldier 2, but quite a bit worse than either. The MacGuffin is an unbelievably contrived plot to wipe out the US government, and we spend two hours sitting through unrealistic action sequences and incoherent techo-drivel to get there. The action is pretty much non-stop, but this somehow serves to reduce its impact and the film gets rather dull after the seventeenth by-the-book chase. It's just about watchable, but make sure somebody else pays for the cost of renting it.
Great on the BFI IMAX - although I don't think this in one for DVD. I'm with Jodie on the level of reality - it's just preposterous. What I thought was a shame was the lack of explanation of how these events can occur. I perhaps could have suspended belief if they had said it was 20 years in the future or that this is a result after years of aggressive counter terrorism laws - but no, apparently this can happen today :) Hows the 'creatives gone wild' supercomputer, very HAL, albeit not original.
Psychotic sat-nav with an eyeball (?!?!) on a stick (?!?!) causes havoc in Washington in this terribly predictable, text-book, action thriller. That said, I was wetting myself with laughter near the end as the plot continued to unfold and unfold into the most preposterous tale ever told. Pick a cinema where you can take beer in.
Predictable pseudo-technical trash
