Synopsis

This is the outrageous and controversial story of legendary movie star Joan Crawford (Faye Dunaway) and her struggle with the dual role of fading actress and tormented mother. Mommie Dearest is based on the memoirs of Crawford’s adopted daughter Christina and provides an insight into the private Crawford, trying to survive in the cutthroat movie industry and so desperate to be a mother she adopted children when she was single. Largely from Christina's viewpoint, we see Crawford's succession of lovers and husbands, career ups and (mainly) downs, fantastic egotism, and dependence on and abusiveness toward her children.

  1. Brilliant horror-biopic

    06 December 2008
On initial release Faye Dunaway received a Golden Rassberry for her hysterical performance of the former queen of Hollywood, but the truth is that she is utterly compelling. Based on the scathing memoir by daughter Christina Crawford, this film has come to define the 'real' Joan Crawford for many people even though much of its facts have been contested. Crawford's most iconic films from the 1940s were full-on melodramas and Dunaway's performance is a kind of play on those performances, as well as an extension of Joan Crawford's late-career horror persona. Indeed this film must be one of the few biopics that is also horrific. The sense of dread is sharply tuned and Crawford becomes a truly deranged monster. Also check out the impeccable production design that places the film directly into the 1940s.
