Synopsis

Retired auto worker, Korean War veteran and widower Walt Kowalski (Eastwood) is waiting out the rest of his life. His neighbors have all moved or passed away, replaced by Hmong immigrants he despises and aimless gangs of African American and Latino teenagers. Then someone tries to steal his prized Gran Torino, the car he helped built on his own assembly line. And by standing up to the thieves, Walt Kowalski becomes the unintended hero who changes the lives of his neighbors, of a boy being pushed into crime by local gangs -- and of his own life as well. Clint Eastwood, the Academy Award-winning director of Million Dollar Baby and Unforgiven and Academy-nominated director of Letters From Iwo Jima and Mystic River, returns to direct and star in his first role since his Oscar-nominated performance in Million Dollar Baby.

  1. :) always and forever great :)

    03 October 2009
Clint Eastwood is the man. I have been watching his movies all my life and they have never been anything less than great and this is no exception. I laughed, I cried, I cheered 'yes you son of a b**** gang thug take that'. It was a fantasticly wonderfully produced, acted and scripted film and definitely one for the collection. The person who compared this film to a Sandra Bullock Rom Com needs therapy cause their crazy. It's a beautifully crafted portrayal of a son of a b**** racist with a heart, crusty though it may be, and a moral compus, crooked but still pointing towards right. And no apologies for any of it just a straight tell it as it is no bull attitude....in an age full of pc overkill and bureaucratic risk assessing health and safety, oh dear lets not upset anyone crapola it was an uplifting breath of fresh truthful air. :))))))
  2. Grrrrrr...

    12 August 2009
This is Clint's best since Unforgiven. I'd stay the hell off his lawn too.
  3. Another Great From Master Clint

    12 August 2009
Definitely the best film I've seen this year so far, a simple story brilliantly acted and directed by Clint Eastwood. Filmed in just a few weeks after completing The Changeling and a small production budget of just $33 million dollars this went on to gross $270 million dollars worldwide. Clearly a winner. Highly Recommended.
  4. Tori-fic!

    12 August 2009
This is a great movie of a man (Clint) in this twilight years, who is slowly coming to terms with his eventual mortality. Although at first glance this seems like a very depressing watch which may result in you talking you own morality it is actually a very elegantly produced piece of cinema that will have you laughing more than sobbing for the old fella. The wonderfully gradual development of the main character endears him to the audience as a good man with flaws. His psychology is unravelled throughout the film as you get an understanding of where his miss placed belief system has stemmed from. But however you try it’s hard not to like him by the end. I would definitely recommend this film.
  5. When Dirty Harry meets retirement

    12 August 2009
One of the best Eastwood movies I've seen in a long time (aside from watching re-runs of Dirty Harry & Kelly's Heroes at every opportunity). Clint manages to pull off the elderly patriotic bitter racist ex-army loner with ease. Bit slow at times perhaps but all is soon forgiven in the final few scenes of this wonderful movie...
  6. Not surprising but a good watch

    12 August 2009
The story is as predictable as a Sandra Bullock rom-com but really you’re going to watch it because you like Clint’s movies and his characters within them. You won’t be disappointed with this one. He’s more compelling the older he gets and you do see Walt rather than Clint (though you might wonder if Clint also struggles with his prejudices and coming to terms with a changing world!). An uncomplicated movie which is tender, tragic and wryly funny all at the same time. Another gripping movie from a master at the top of his game.
  7. Clint proves he still has it.

    12 August 2009
And i don't know what 'it' is, but he has it.
  8. If only your grandad was this cool...

    12 July 2009
A brilliantly written, acted and directed movie. Clint Eastwood is entirely believable as a grumpy old man who has become isolated as his neighbourhood of white working-class Americans with good old-fashioned values deteriorated into the gang culture of races he feels have no place in America, let alone next door. The transition from hating the Hmong families to realising he has more in common with them than with his estranged, sponging family is entirely believable, and leads to some very emotional scenes and a perfect, if rather sad, ending.
  9. So many one liners

    07 April 2009
Never before have I heard so many different terms for someone of Vietnamese origin... The barber shop scene has to be the best of the film. A great film, and a fantastic little ditty from Eastwood at the end.
  10. Boyz n the Hood meets Grumpy Old Men

    10 March 2009
I really enjoyed this movie, Clint Eastwood has done an outstanding job of acting, directing and producing - for a man of his age he is unbelievable. Not as good as his Million Dollar Baby, but that was something quite special. Perhaps Gran Torino's only let down was that it followed in the footsteps of other films which made it a tad predictable but overall it lived up to the hype.
