  1. Breathtaking.

    22 December 2009
It is now quite rare that you come across a film that is so original that you feel you have never seen anything like it before but that is exactly what happened when I first saw A Scanner Darkly. I realise that it is adapted from a Philip K. Dick novel but the originality stems from the visuals. The rotoscoping animation works beautifully and lends itself to the story perfectly. Linklater scores!
  2. Faithful adaptation

    06 December 2008
This film employs the disorientating technique of rotoscoping which director Linklater had used earlier for his film Waking Life. The technique involves shooting the whole thing on digital film and then having a team of animators draw over each frame – over five hundred hours of work for each minute of film. Paranoia and doubt are the overwhelming emotions that seep out of the film, and while the critics were somewhat divided over the merits of the movie, it is well worth your time. Firstly just for the style and beauty, and an appreciation of the film simply as technical achievement, but also for the innovative way in which Linklater manages to stay true to the vision of Philip. K. Dick, in a way that other, more ‘faithful’ films (e.g. Minority Report) simply do not.
