Synopsis

Written and directed by Ricky Gervais and Matthew Robinson, this hilarious comedy takes place in an alternative reality in which lying does not exist. Everyone, even politicians and advertisers, speaks the truth (and nothing but the truth). But when a loser named Mark (Gervais) discovers lying, he finds that dishonesty has its rewards.

In a world where every word is assumed to be the absolute truth, Mark succeeds in lying his way to fame and fortune. But things soon get out of control, as people start to treat his lies as gospel. He has the entire world hanging on his every word - but can he win the heart of the woman he loves?

Well worth watching

Despite Ricky Gervais not being my most favourite actor/comedien, I loved this film, and the philosophical implications, and the man himself has gone up in my estimation. That does not happen a lot.

What a lovely, heartwarming, poignant and clever film.

Funny in places

Maybe I'm just becoming a little tired of Gervais's style of delivery, or perhaps he didn't suit this film, but something had me liking this film at times, but loathing it at others. It's fun, but quite cliché in places. Worth a watch if you can't find any other comedy films to watch...

Weird and good

The premise of this movie seems simple enough (in a world where people can only tell the truth, a man invents the lie) but when you let it play itself out, it becomes very odd, very quickly - and quite philosophical - in a Ricky Gervais kind of way. It makes it all very funny and surprisingly compelling.
