In a soaring new chapter in the epic story of the Man of Steel, Superman Returns to fight for truth and justice! While old enemy Lex Luthor (Kevin Spacey - Seven, L.A. Confidential) plots to render him powerless, Superman (Brandon Routh) must face the heartbreaking realization that Lois Lane (Kate Bosworth - Beyond the Sea), has moved on with her life. Or has she? From the depths of the ocean to the far reaches of outer space, Superman blazes an epic journey of redemption to protect the world he loves from cataclysmic destruction. The X-Men's Bryan Singer takes the helm in this superpowered epic action-adventure that reunites Superman with a world that's almost learned to live without him.
Bryan Singer's much anticipated Superman Returns, while fairly successful at the box-office, sadly offers little new to the Superman saga, and - undoubtedly its worst fault - it is simply far too boring for large parts of the film. Ok, so the opening sequence is impressive enough, and few people will deny the tingle of anticipation when the familiar theme music kicks in, but sadly the film never really delivers on the original promise it offers. The acting is strangely bland, particularly guilty is Brandon Routh as Clark Kent – he isn't bad, but certainly isn't memorable either. Certain critics were falling over themselves to heap praise on the movie, but this seems more for the fact that this is a new Superman film, rather than a consideration of the merits of the film itself. Suggestion: watch the opening 40 minutes, and then go and watch the first Superman film.
Out of all the comic book adaptations, this is one of my favourites. I fell into it the other night and really enjoyed watching it again. While it does lack a superpowered villain, Superman does everything else you could get excited about: he flies, he uses his heat-vision, he takes bullets to the chest and he flies some more. And unlike some of the comic book movies, it doesn't look fake. Definitely worth watching.
I diasgree. I think (christian imagery aside) that Bryan Singer did something pretty impressive here. He humanised the man of steel, and somewhere along the way, actually made me LIKE superman. And jeeeeez did I hate him before. I can see how this movie would've annoyed DC fans - but what doesn't ? I love the fact that superman has to be saved by Lois during the movie, I think making him fallable, and struggle his own humanity issues, is far more exciting than just another superhero movie.
Disappointing return of Superman
