A very good genre splicer that could have been so much more

‘The Matrix’ is a seminal film that is influenced by so many genres. A computer hacker, Neo, (played by Keanu Reeves) discovers that the ‘real world’ is nothing more than a computer generated fantasy and he joins forces with a rebel group who attempt to overthrow the control of ‘The Matrix’. While this is a terrific concept, it just falls short of becoming a truly great film. That said it’s still a fascinating watch. The plot powers along at an excellent pace and there are some breathtaking and unique special effects. Perhaps if the creators had concentrated on just one genre and fine-tuned the storyline it could have become one of the great sci-fi pictures. By not doing this, the film offers a little something for everybody which makes it far more commercial. Despite this, it is a very, very good film – it just could have been so much more.
