Through focusing on one family, the film is a dramatisation of the tensions that exist between first and second generation West Indian immigrants in the Notting Hill area of London, and how the younger generation see their parents as having rejected their black identity in favour of white English values. The younger son of the family becomes involved in collective black action owing to his lack of success in finding employment.
