Synopsis

One of Jarman's most accessible works, Caravaggio is a ravishingly shot depicition of the painter's life as he reminisces in jail cell. The look of Caravaggio's work is beautifully captured, whilst the acting and direction are nothing short of superb.

WARNING: This film may contain explicit sexual scenes, strong language and violence.

The late Derek Jarman took the same anachronistic liberties in depicting the life of his subject – Italian, seventeenth-century painter Caravaggio – as the painter himself did with his subjects. Little-known actor Nigel Terry is great as the violently impulsive title character, and the film comprises flashbacks over his life as he lies dying. Specific focus is given to his fraught relationships with two of his models: Sean Bean’s muscular Ranuccio Thomasoni and Tilda Swinton’s Lena. But this is no cut-and-dried biopic, as Jarman frames the drama within ornate tableaux and honours the complexity of the emotions by reining in the melodrama and telling the story through the stresses of his camera and glances of the actors. As you’d expect from a from a film about a painter, it’s a visual marvel made from very spare ingredients and with the help of a discerning and intelligent director.

I'm afraid this film lost me. It felt like a triumph of form over substance. Though the form was painterly and vivid, the content seemed ritualistic, disconnected, slow, obtuse, indesciferable, pompous and felt as if directed to an audience more conversant with a more sophisticated appreciation of artistic endeavour than I. The time split between a more modern era and the time of C. seemed one more affectation that futher obscured any connection to the subject matter rather than the opposite. Sorry, this film went over my head, left me unmoved and even a bit irritated by my inability to feel any connection with any of the characters except maybe slightly for the painters mute(?) assistant

    Caravaggio

A revealing insight into the life of 17th Century painter Caravaggio created by Derek Jarman. With a fantastic cast including starring performances by Sean Bean and Robbie Coltrane Caravaggio emphasises the contrast between his philosophical and religious painting and his brutish, violent private life. Though criticised for being an inaccurate portrayal by many in the art world this film is beautifully made and engaging throughout.

    Interesting for the Interested

This strange and artistic portray of Caravaggio is not in any way mainstream. Jarman worked with a very low budget to try to bring the era to the film without having big locations and a huge amount of extras, hence this becomes a very personal film.
