Synopsis

London is neither feature film nor documentary but a provocative essay in the form of a journal, recording fictitious journeys through a very real city. Writer, director and photographer Keiller shot the film during 1992, a year which witnessed the re-election of John Major, the continuation of the IRA bombing campaign and the beginning of the 'fall of the house of Windsor'. The narrator employed by the enigmatic and unseen Robinson, gives many wry insights into the city and its mysteries.

Let me take you by the hand and lead you...

If you didn't know Patrick Keiller's smartly rambling, tricksy walking tour of our city from 1994, you might think that his title was pompous or presumptive. But his film is anything but as he gives us a fictional, unseen narrator, Robinson (voiced by Paul Scofield), who takes us on a tour of London, known and less known, grand and grotty, around the time of the film’s making, taking in such references as the 1992 general election and the IRA bomb at Bishopgate in 1993. Cinematic psychogeography, you might call it, but that’s a bit, well, pompous for a film that is endlessly self-mocking, witty and perceptive. If only British cinema produced more such films that dance merrily on the border between fact and fiction – but, then, again, Keiller’s film – the first in a trilogy – is so unique in tone that imitators would easily be caught out.

    Modern London

This is a film that shows the different layers of husk from the city of London. The latter is a false modernity that surrounds it. Still majestic, but stale, still Imperial, but colonized, is British, but European, is beautiful, but mysterious, a dangerous role model. Is London.

    Enlightening

    01 December 2009
Filmed during John Major’s reign as prime minister this is a relatively pessimistic study of the nation’s capital. Much of the argument is focussed on the modernisation of London and the unfortunate replacement of old architecture with new unsightly modern skyscrapers. A very interesting film, taken from a very English point of view and accentuates the unfortunate by-products of modernity.
