An adequate reworking that fails to live up to its illustrious predecessor

For those who are unfamiliar with the plot (seriously, where have you been for the last 30 years?), the film follows the story of a young boy who wins a chance to experience the weird and wonderful world that is Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory. Burton’s modern version retains much of the magic that Gene Wilder and co. delivered all those years ago. Full of outlandish colour and quirky songs, this is a delightful helping of cinema that is best enjoyed on the big screen. Despite its irresistible charm, the film still fails to live up to its illustrious predecessor. While Johnny Depp is a worthy understudy, he cannot top or even compare to the brilliant performance that Wilder delivered in the initial offering. Although an enjoyable watch, for a truly captivating fairytale – watch the original.
