The Ultimate Trip

Little can be said of this epic film that has not been said before – it is a towering influence over just about every science fiction film (and arguably every other type as well) that has been made since. Released in 1968, the film was perhaps Kubrick’s finest hour even though at the time of its release the reviews were polarised. A joint creation of Kubrick and Arthur C. Clarke, the film documents the evolution of mankind, from ape to futuristic space voyager. Underpinning Kubrick’s ambitious and beautiful visual imagery is the equally impressive sountrack – and considering barely a word is spoken for the first hour of the film, the music is integral to the unfolding of the story. Still recognised today as one of the greatest film achievements of the last century, while some may think it overrated, it is unarguable that this is a film which simply demands to be seen.
