This movie slipped below my radar until this evening, and I can't believed I've been missing out. Three teenage girls escape for a weekend in a remote woodland cabin, when they get an unexpected and very unwelcome visitor. But don't be fooled - this is no bog-standard teen slasher movie. It's a brilliantly written and very tense thriller, observed through a wonderfully theatrical format. It remains ambiguous throughout, keeping you guessing about individual motives and possible outcomes. If you can dig this out then it's well worth a watch. Creepy, intelligent, dramatic, and tense. Excellent.
Ignore the brief flash of nudity; this is a tense, well-written thriller. Three friends just out of high school head up to a cabin in the woods for an isolated weekend break. There's a bold one, a sweet one and a touchy one, and the cracks in their relationships are evident from the start. Then a threatening man turns up, and slots right into the girls' deep fears...
With just four actors and three locations -- if you count stunning mountain wildernesses as one location -- the movie was always going to be claustrophobic. What's far more impressive are the believable performances and the high-quality writing. It's a slow burn, particularly for viewers used to loads of quick cuts and liberal splashes of gore, but it's genuinely nervy. It's also nice that none of the characters ever makes any stupid, horror-movie decisions; events unfold plausibly and realistically.
I'm not going to give anything away, but I do want to point out that this is absolutely not a "teens being hunted one by one by a maniac" movie. Not even slightly. Gore fans and action fiends will probably think it's a waste of time, but if you like tense horror/thrillers, give Wilderness Survival for Girls a try. You won't be disappointed.
