Will Colson turns up for his first day of work as a Pennsylvania railway engineer, where he is paired up with veteran conductor Frank Barnes for a routine run. However, further down the track a hapless worker allows a kilometre-long train to get away from him, and the situation soon escalates into a full-blown emergency. Initial plans to derail the runaway train before it collides with another are cancelled when it emerges that it is loaded with toxic chemicals. The fate of an entire town now rests in the hands of Barnes and Colson, who have to chase down the train and try and bring it to a halt.
