Synopsis

When the evil Mr. Freeze (Schwarzenegger) teams up with toxic Poison Ivy (Uma Thurman) to freeze Gotham City and destroy its residents, the end appears near for superheroes Batman (George Clooney) and Robin (Chris O'Donnell). But with the arrival of Batgirl (Alicia Silverstone), the dynamic duo becomes a transcendent trio in this fourth episode of the blockbuster theatrical series.

    a turgid mess

    Star-sodden but bowel-clenchingly embarrassing fourth installment of the Batman films in which Arnold Schwarzenegger is the only actor not to disappoint, and then only because he wheels out the kind of club-tongued performance we've come to love and expect from the big man. To be fair the script is laughable, most especially during the exchanges between Robin/Batgirl and Batman. Chris O'Donnell and Alicia Silverstone's characters follow a pouty, adolescent path to realising they're not cool enough to do anything without Batman, but Batman has now lost the grim chic of the first two films and seems more focused on wringing money out of the Batfranchise, so can't really help much. Silly, aimless, and universally derided, George Clooney reportedly offered to refund any Batman fan's cinema ticket for the film out of his own pocket. Ouch.
