twee and sickly

The first film adaptation in J.K Rowling’s world-renowned saga featuring the infamous boy wizard, Harry Potter. Harry travels to Hogwart’s School of Magic where he makes friends with sidekicks Ron and Hermione. The trio become involved in the mystery of the Philosopher’s stone, and as they learn more they discover that evil forces are at work. Okay, it’s a children’s film but did they have to make it quite so twee and sickly? The whole thing plays much too safe to really realise its potential, and while it remains true to the book you do feel they could have taken a few more risks in making the film more edgy and dark. To be fair, the film does nicely set up the characters, and will no doubt please fans of the books, but overall there’s too much schmaltz and not enough grit. It may provide an entertaining two hours but the film could have been so much better.
